POLICY ISSUES

Once elected, it is OUR responsibility to advocate for the best interests of our students and uphold the values of equity, inclusion, and academic freedom. In the face of potential laws that threaten these principles, I will approach each situation with a commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of our students.

Safe, Inclusive Schools

Safety and the well-being of all students, teachers, and staff within our school district is my top concern. In light of recent developments such as the new gun law affecting schools in Tennessee. Safety is paramount, and I am committed to implementing measures that prioritize the protection of our educational environments. To achieve a vision for Memphis that embodies equality, solidarity, liberty, and justice for all, I will advocate for comprehensive safety protocols and resources in our schools. This includes investing in security measures, such as trained personnel and updated technology, to mitigate risks and respond effectively to any threats.

Expanding the number of school counselors and mental health experts will enhance the provision of mental health support. These tools will aid in identifying and resolving possible issues before they worsen, promoting a more secure school environment. The success of education depends on our teachers' being well-prepared and supported. This means providing them with mental health support as well. I'm going to advocate for competitive pay, chances for professional growth, and a welcoming workplace that draws and keeps excellent teachers.

Teacher Development

Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for teachers, administrators, and support staff on restorative justice principles, practices, and techniques. This training should emphasize cultural competence, trauma-informed practices, and the importance of building positive relationships with students. From this, staff should be able to recognize that there is a root issue that has steamed from something greater. We should then allow students to meet with licensed life coaches and therapists before, during, and after school.

There are things to do in our community...we just have to connect with the organizations that are giving back to our youth. Creating effective collaborations with local organizations, community leaders, and parents is crucial for cultivating a nurturing educational environment that can also focus on youth activities during and after school. These collaborative efforts will facilitate the mobilization of resources for school improvements, assist in decreasing crime, and the customization of education policies to address the unique requirements of the areas we serve.
